Summary: Fifth grader Annemarie Johansen and her close friend, Ellen Rosen, dream about life before Hitler took over Denmark. But now life in Copenhagen is packed with education, rations, and soldiers wearing Swastikas (Nazis). Hitler won't back down and all Jews are being relocated. Ellen, Anne's close friend happens to be Jewish, therefore Ellen moves in with Anne and tries to be part of the family. Annemarie's best friend's life is depending on her.

Opinion: This is a great story and has won a Newberry Medal for it's greatness. Lois Lowry has won more than two Newberry's so far.
