Interview with Mr. J.

Mr. J. has been teaching at Conneaut for 18 years. He teaches 5th grade, but would also like to teach 3rd and 4th grade. When he was about 11 years old, he learned mostly the same thing as we do, except not as much science. He enjoys working with kids, and if he wasn't a teacher, he would probably be someone who helps other people. He likes teaching science and loves to see his students get excited about experiments. One of the challenges he has is having so much to teach for the year. Mr. J. is best known for his sense of humor and his science experiments.

College Football Battle for the BCS National Championship

Florida and Ohio State will be playing in the BCS National Championship game. Their have been many people that have debated about who should get in to the National Title game. Florida or Michigan? Now the ratings have been out for about a week and people are still talking about who should have gotten in. Most say that Michigan should have gotten in because they lost to #1 Ohio State by 3 points and that was their only loss of the season. Florida's case to get in was that they had the toughest schedule in the nation (proven by the leagues computer system). Both teams records were 11-1. We think that both teams would have putten up a great game against Ohio State. Here is a list of the bowl games for this season:

Wacko Lights,and Other Weird Stories

By: Samantha
Wacko Lights
It was reported by a girl that some her light had been acting weird. "I was reading a book and suddenly my light went off," said the girl. "But when I looked up it went back on again. When I looked back down again down again it turned off, up, down, on, off." apparently it continued like that for a wile. "I got scared and got my dad but when he went up their the light was fine so he left. The second he left it started to go off and on again; off, on, off, on, off. I got my dad again and of course the light was fine but this time I didn't let him go." according to her the light kept on doing that so it was thrown away but when ever she goes in to a room the lights flicker. What could be the course of this? Spirits, bad wiring, or bad luck?
Bats Come Through Floor
A small girl clames that bats were coming through the floor. "I was going to the bathroom at about midnight and I saw small bloobs coming through the floor" said the girl. After they squeezed through the floor they took flight and scared the girl who went to get her dad. After that They had many more bat problems in their house. So what is this the bat curse?
Grandma Witch
It was reported that a family had a witch for a grandma. "She could tell what you were feeling by looking at your cursive!" said a family member. "She was soo good that some circuses hired her when she needed extra money!" sometimes she would read on of the family members cursive and get their mood exactly right!

  • Be positive when you do your Homework and if you are having trouble than take big deep breaths or take a break

Wacky Poem of the Month
One dark day, in the middle of the night,
Two dead soldiers rose to fight.
They stood back to back and faced each other,
Drew their swords and shot each other.
A deaf policeman heard the noise,
And went to shoot the two dead boys.
If you don't believe this story is true,
Ask the blind man, he saw it too.

Sixth Grade Dare Graduation

On the 20th of December, the entire sixth grade will be graduating from the D.A.R.E. program. D.A.R.E. is a program that teaches you about drugs and violence and how to avoid them. Each sixth grader has written a D.A.R.E. report that says what they learned in D.A.R.E. and has their own pledge on how they will treat drugs. Each sixth grade class voted for two people who had the best reports in their class to read them at the graduation. The people who were picked are Peter Burroughs, Belinda Chen, Evan Gardner, Micheal Jarrell, Michele Mathias, and Holly Rothweiler.

Conneaut Tradition

The Santa store a school tradition since 2003 has once again come and gone. We all know that the Santa Store is a place to get cheap nice gifts but do we know what makes it tick that is what I set out to find. The first thing I think we allwant to know is where does our hard earned money goes all profit from the Santa store go to the P.T.O. The workers all joined the store so they could provide us with cheap gifts. The supplier is Celebrations who also provide our Ice cream social games and prizes. That's all the knowledge I have on the Santa Store.

The Read-in is in for a win

By:Brian- Conneaut News

The Read-in, as most of the kids know, is actually called the Winter Read-in (we just call it the Read-in because it is shorter). The celebration this year, takes place on Thursday, December 14. It is always in December and a few days before winter vacation (Thursday, December 22). At the Read-in kids listen to adults from the community and from school read books. They also get to drink milk, eat cookies, and make crafts. Some adults going to the read at the Winter Read-in are John Quinn (the mayor of Bowling Green), Hugh Caumartin (superintendent), and a few teachers.

Behind the Teacher: Mrs. Bortel

For 32 years, Mrs. Bortel has played a major role in Conneaut elementary. She enjoys getting to know her variety of many students, and when asking her about the hardships of teaching, she says the hardest part is having the students learn in the best possible manner they can, and to learn as much as they can. If she wasn't teaching, she says she would probably like to "soar through the sky in a airplane. If she wasn't teaching the fourth grade, she would like to teach 3rd or 5th, because she student taught the third grade, and fifth is only a year over hers.
At Conneaut she might be known as a neatness fanatic. Social Studies and Reading are her preferable subjects to teach. At the ages of 10-13 she learned how to play the clarinet and speak French. She enjoys teaching from the book and also creatively based on her students needs. Although she has taught for 32 years at Conneaut we know that she will have many more wonderful years teaching.
